About Nqwaa Khobee Xeya Trust

Nqwaa Khobee Xeya Conservation Trust (NKXCT) is a CBO in Kgalagadi District that represents the populaces of three settlements: Ukhwi, Ngwatle and Ncaang. Ukhwi is the largest settlement, with about 523 people, followed by Ngwatle with 269 people and Ncaang with 228 people. The Nqwaa Khobee Xeya Trust was registered on the 10th of June 1998, and is guided by a Board and detailed constitution. The Board of the Trust consists of 12 annually elected members (four from each settlement), the VDC (Village Development Committee) chairperson from each settlement, and several ex-officio members (local chiefs, councillors, representatives from the Department of Wildlife and National Parks, District Council S&CD and RADP, Land Board, and District Administration).

The communities of NKXCT had until January 2014 (when the government instituted temporary prohibition of hunting in WMAs) been utilizing the wildlife resource through commercial hunting. Commercial hunting was a significant economic driver for this community as it earned them revenue and instilled an incentive to conserve wildlife resources. In the absence of commercial hunting, the community of NKXCT is now opting for non-consumptive eco-tourism as an alternative economic activity.

NKXCT aims to improve livelihoods, promote environmental conservation education and champion sustainable natural resource utilization among its membership. The Trust seeks to achieve this by promoting constructive conversations on issues of illegal hunting, poisoning of wildlife (notably vultures and carnivores), burning of the veld, and pollution of the air and land and their subsequent ecological consequences.
